Project Her Home App

Available on the Google Play Store and the MIT App Platform

Project Her Home was designed to function as a complete toolkit for women experiencing homelessness. It aims to tackle some of the, often overlooked, unique issues they face on the streets.

Survivors fill out a questionnaire stream and provide location; they are matched with medical, legal, and financial resources as well as nearby domestic violence and women’s homeless shelters.

Problem: More than 85% of the shelters available today are mixed-gender. While these are designed to be safe havens for women, women experience violence at startling levels within them. They are vulnerable and marginalized, and do not have access to the resources they need, forcing the vast majority to 'rough sleep' on the streets.

Project Her Home's Solution: In such situations, women have a hard time finding women-only shelters that will provide them with the support they deserve. Thus, the app connects users with credible and safe women-only shelters near their location for them to avail. It also lets them visualize these resources through the help of a map and provides them with directions to the desired location.

The app also connects the women with multiple financial and rental assistance programs to help them get back on their feet and secure independent housing.

Problem: Women experiencing homelessness do not have the sanitation and personal hygiene resources to cope with their period each month. They are forced to use unsanitary make-shifts that promote the onset of infections.

Project Her Home's Solution: The app features international organizations who provide menstruation supplies. It helps them connect with their local branch to get the supplies. Project HerHome also has multiple resources for women who might be pregnant or with kids. It helps them get in touch with free health clinics for prenatal checkups.

Problem: More than 93% of women on the streets have experienced some form of violence.

Project Her Home's Solution: The app has a 'Keep Me Safe' section. It supplies women with essential self defense tips and videos as well as information regarding reporting to law enforcement. It also has an SOS button that lets them instantaneously connect with 911 if they are in a dangerous situation or are being assaulted. With a click, the app sends 911 a text with their current location to help them get immediate help.

Problem: Women are marginalized in terms of access to mental health resources. They are unable to get the help they need to process their emotions and cope with the trauma.

Project Her Home's Solution: The app features a 'Toolkit' section to give women emotional support and contribute to their wellbeing. It has a 24/7 counseling number for them to talk to and multiple self-care activities embedded within to help them de-stress and cope. The app also has a journal feature that helps them process the ups and downs of their experience and remember the good times to manage the bad. Finally, it also has a discussion forum for users to connect with others experiencing similar situations. It helps the women share their thoughts/feelings with others and gain moral support.
